Interested in joining the lab?

Wonderful! We are currently recruiting graduate students and postdocs. Please see below for specific guidance on how to reach out if you’re looking for a position in the lab. Please also see our lab values page for more information on the type of community we aim to foster in the Kasimatis lab.

The Kasimatis lab is ideal for people who like to ask big, interesting questions related to sexual reproduction and design integrative experiments to answer those questions. Our research is at the intersection of evolution and genetics and utilizes the Caenorhabditis nematode model systems. All projects have some wet lab component to them. We welcome new members who are self-motivated, proactive, collaborative, and excited to learn. We encourage applicants from all backgrounds.

Graduate Students

I look forward to hearing from prospective PhD students who have an interest in sexual selection or sexual conflict. Students should have some prior research experience in evolutionary biology or genetics. Prospective students should have a clear sense of the research themes in the Kasimatis lab and some ideas of how their graduate work could relate to those themes.

Prospective students should first read about the department, our graduate program, and Charlottesville. The department also has a NSF training program EXPAND and the Interdisciplinary Doctoral Fellowship “Reintegrating the Phenotype” for incoming students to support interdisciplinary research, as well as broad career training and an inclusive community, with support from UVA’s PhD+. While not specific to UVA, these additional resources may be helpful in navigating and preparing your graduate school applications:

  • Carson et al. 2021: Advice on Applying to Graduate School in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology: How to Prepare and a Step-By-Step Guide.
  • E & E Grad Preview compiled by the UC Davis Population Biology Student Diversity Committee

After you’ve gone through these resources, reach out to me via email. Please attach your CV and a brief (< 1 page) description of your research experience and interests and why the Kasimatis lab specifically is a good fit for your research interests and career goals.

Postdocs

I look forward to hearing from prospective postdocs whose research interests overlap with those of the lab. Prospective postdocs must have a PhD in the life sciences by the time they join the lab and demonstrate a solid record of research productivity. Interested individuals should reach out to me via email to brainstorm potential funding options. When you contact me, please attach your CV, a 1 page outline of your future research interests and career goals, and a brief (1 paragraph) statement describing why you’re specifically interested in joining the Kasimatis lab.
